CAS Number 504-63-2 is associated with Propanediol 1,3, referred to simply as Propanediol. This natural and eco-friendly alternative to propylene glycol is derived from corn sugar and serves various functions in cosmetic formulations. It functions as a humectant, hair and skin conditioner, preservative booster, and solvent, providing a light, non-sticky, and slightly dry feel to the skin.
Propanediol enhances hydration in hair and body products, outperforming propylene glycol and butylene glycol at a 5% concentration. When combined with glycerin, it exhibits a synergistic effect, reducing the tackiness of glycerin while maintaining increased hydration levels. At concentrations up to 75%, it demonstrates low potential to irritate or sensitize the skin.
In surfactant systems, Propanediol improves clarity, viscosity, and reduces the amount of salt required for thickening. It enhances flash foam, creating more elegant systems with creamier lather and denser foam.
In hair care products like shampoos, conditioners, leave-on conditioners, and styling aids, Propanediol provides a cleaner feeling post-rinse, increases moisturization, improves detangling, reduces static, and enhances both wet and dry combing.
Furthermore, Propanediol serves as an excellent solvent for challenging-to-dissolve ingredients such as salicylic acid, ferulic acid, allantoin, and ascorbic acid.
